Vilnius Sights, part 1

The first thing to know about Vilnius in 2002 is to forget what three to four year old guidebooks tell you.  (This is not to downplay the usefulness of Lonely Planet phrasebooks and guidebooks!)  The Old Town is clean and pretty and undergoing a lot of renovation, and you really don't need to bring along your own toilet paper.

They are absolutely right when they advise you to pick up a copy of Vilnius In Your Pocket and explain what the prettiest sites are....

Cathedral Square...

St. Anne's church, which Napoleon was enamored with....

The Gates of Dawn...

...and the street leading up to them.

At a restaurant with a Lithuanian folk band, Don was picked out of the crowd to dance a polka with one of the performers. How'd they know that he was the only person in our group from Wisconsin?

Don and I stayed in a couple of very nice hotels: Hotel Sarunas (left) and the Astorija (right - behind the foreground City Hall).
